The Antarctic Tundra has an elevation of about 4,125 feet. South Georgia has a elevation of 8,802 feet and the Kerguelen Islands has a high elevation of 5,550 feet. The whole continent itself has little. Why Protect Tundras? The Alaskan Tundra is home to countless animals that aren't found anywhere else in the world. Many of these animals are increasing towards extinction due to human activities ; Global Warming is defined as the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide. The tundra biome also contains many awesome plant species which thrive in the winter conditions of the the tundra. For example, reindeer moss is an endangered plant due to heavy pollution. Reindeer moss provides a stable food source for, you guessed it, reindeer (also caribou and other grazing animals) Tundra's Climate. The Tundra's climate makes the growing season for plants limited to about 6-10 weeks (about 60 days). Also, the Tundra has long periods of darkness during the winter. Yet, there is mainly Winter and Summer in the Tundra. experiments As a tundra biome is located at the poles, it is in darkness for a considerable part of the year. On the other hand, during a part of the year, it is constantly in light. As a result, only those species of plants and animals that can survive in the dark thrive in this ecosystem
